FIVE TOP TIPS FOR YOUR CHEVENING APPLICATION

1. Ensure that you have read and understood the questions
Chevening Awards are highly competitive. Make sure that you have fully understood and clearly answered the questions. Your application will be assessed by an independent panel, against hundreds of other applicants from your country or terriroty, so ensure that you have explained why you are an ideal Chevening Scholar or Fellow.

2. Clear and concise answers
Make the most of the upper word limit on each question by choosing your words carefully and answering the questions in a clear and direct manner. Use examples where appropriate, and draw on experiences from your career and studies. Please do not co-write answers with friends or plagiarise. All applications are scanned by plagiarism software and applications that contain material from the internet or publications are automatically rejected.

3. Remember that you can save your application and come back to it
If you are applying for a scholarship, you have three months (from 6 August to 6 November) to submit your application so make sure that this time is used wisely. Take time to carefully consider your answers—do not submit rushed answers. For a step-by-step guide to the new online application system see our handy video here.

4. Apply for your university courses as soon as possible
Some universities may not be accepting applications until after the Chevening Scholarship application deadline. You should submit your three university applications as soon as you can. Some universities charge application fees and it is your responsibility to meet these costs.

5. Be mindful of the deadline
Applications for Chevening Scholarships close on 6 November 2018 at 12:00pm (UK time). Some fellowship programmes have an earlier deadline day, so please check your country pages for further details. You will need to submit your application ahead of this time. You should not wait until the last day in case you encounter technical difficulties. Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.

CHOOSING YOUR PERFECT COURSE:
POSTGRAD’S OPINION

Finding the right course at the right institution is critical if you are to get the most out of your experience of studying in the UK. Our partners from postgrad.com know all about what’s on offer across the UK, and they kindly share advice on how to choose the perfect course:

1. Make sure you opt for a subject that really interests you

This may sound obvious but it’s really important to opt for a subject that you actually enjoy when you are choosing your postgrad programme. Although studying a subject at postgraduate level is extremely fulfilling it is also an intense experience, and to successfully study at this level you need to make sure you choose a subject that you have a great deal of interest in. Browse our subject guides and see what factors you’ll need to consider when choosing your postgrad programme.

2. Choose a programme that is taught in the way you enjoy

Different students thrive in different environments. Whilst some people thrive on classroom-based learning and prefer a more theoretical approach to learning, others benefit more from a hands-on experience and being based more ‘out in the field’. Make sure you find out how your chosen subject is taught at your top university choices to ensure you choose the best fit for you. Find out about the variety of universities in the UK and decide what suits you.

3. Location matters

The location of your university also plays an important role in your enjoyment of your postgraduate experience – and the UK has a great selection of universities in a variety of fantastic locations. Do you crave the big city lifestyle? If the answer is yes, then you’ll probably be best off in a university in one of the UK’s big cities like London, Liverpool or Glasgow. However, if you’d prefer a campus-based postgraduate experience – the UK also has plenty of world-class universities in more relaxed locations for you to choose from. Have a look at some of the great places to live and study in the UK.

4. Talk to former students

Finally, speaking to people who have already completed your potential postgrad programme is a great way to gauge what the course is really like. Most UK universities have strong alumni networks and by connecting with the university’s alumni via social media or the university’s alumni office, it can really help you work out if your postgrad course will deliver what you expect from it. For example, former students can give you information about networking opportunities and tips for making connections with others.

If you still need some more guidance in choosing your perfect postgrad programme, a great way to get started is to use the Chevening course search powered by postgrad.com to find out exactly what postgraduate courses are available in your chosen field.
